Make Your Mark with Custom Commercial Laser Marking Services in NZ

With laser technology, it’s possible to customise and brand virtually any type of surface, no matter what the material. At KAR Innovations, we are comfortable working with acrylic, wood, glass, leather, plastic, and most metals, including stainless steel, aluminium, and copper. Whether you are looking for laser etching or laser engraving, we can help you get the idea that’s in your head onto the surface, product, or item of your choice. We also offer custom laser marking in NZ, which is a bit different from engraving and etching.

What Is Laser Marking?

Laser engraving and laser etching are both processes that involve using a laser to ‘breach’ the surface of a material. With engraving, you are literally vaporising a small amount of the material surface, creating recesses in the shape of text or images. With etching, you are melting the top layer of the material in such a way that it expands and creates a raised mark on top of the item. We use both these services for everything from wedding rings to trophies to business windows.

When you opt for commercial laser marking in NZ, you are getting a slightly different service. Laser marking doesn’t involve melting or vaporising the surface of the material in question. Instead, the process uses a lower powered laser beam to heat the material gradually. This gradual heating causes the material just beneath the surface to oxidise and, therefore, change colour.

Once finished, the laser marking process will have left high contrast marks on the material. As with engraving or etching, these marks can be anything you want them to be, from text to logos to illustrations. The surface will still be smooth, unlike with engraving and etching which both add texture.

Where Can I Get Laser Marking in NZ?

If you aren’t familiar with the process described above, you aren’t alone. Laser marking, while certainly not unheard of, is not as common as laser engraving or laser etching. Fewer companies offer it as a service, and fewer clients make use of it to mark or brand glass, metal, plastic, or other materials. Laser marking is also known by a few different names, depending on the context. Some companies refer to it as ‘laser colouration.’ In situations where the material being marked is a metal, we call the process ‘annealing.’ And with plastic, laser marking is synonymous with laser charring.
