Understanding the Difference Between Laser Marking, Laser Engraving, and Laser Etching

As laser marking services have become more popular—particularly for business branding purposes, the terms ‘marking,’ ‘engraving’ and ‘etching’ have become engrained in the public consciousness. These words are often used interchangeably but denote distinctly different services. Read on to learn more about what makes each service unique.

The definition for laser marking is the least well defined. Depending on who you ask, you might hear that laser marking is just the broad category of services under which both laser engraving and laser etching exist. After all, both these services involve using a laser to ‘mark’ a surface in some way.

In many scenarios, though, laser marking is a completely different service than laser etching in NZ. Laser marking uses a very low powered laser beam to discolour the material being marked. The beam is hot enough to oxidise the material (be it glass, plastic, or metal) but not so hot that it cuts into or removes any of the material. As such, laser marking leaves black marks on the surface of the material without breaching the surface itself.

In contrast, laser engraving breaks the surface of the material and actually removes some of it. Lasers used for this purpose are higher powered, as they must cut through and vaporise the surface material. This process leaves marks—usually text—on the material that are noticeable both by sight and touch.

When you seek custom laser etching in NZ, you are choosing a service that lands somewhere between laser marking and laser engraving. Similar to engraving, the etching process does break the surface of the material being etched. By using a very hot laser beam, an etcher will carefully melt the surface of the material based on the design provided by the client. The melted material expands outward, creating a raised marking.
